Time Machine: what three things would you tell your past self before starting wet shaving?

What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time?

For me it would be:

1. Don’t buy razors, soaps, or brushes based on “what is cheapest?” The money you’ll waste more than overshadows what you’ll spend on better stuff.

2. No added pressure means NO ADDED PRESSURE. Avoid the temptation to get all visible hair in one pass, and let the razor do the work, your skin will thank you.

3. Only change one thing at a time, switching soap and blade and razor at the same time means you won’t know which is responsible for better/worse results. In the beginning, there are SO many options, patience is truly the key.

Yours?

1. Stay away from shave forums.

2. Stick with what you have. (I started with a Gillette OLD type and I still haven't found anything better.)

3. Boars are the only shave brushes worth having.

4. Don't ever look on ebay or anywhere else on the internet for shaving stuff, and read #2 again.

1. Buy razors in lots
2. Catalog as you acquire.
3. Buy lots more before you retire. He who retires with the most razors in need of restoration stays busy.

I think you have to separate shaving for personal hygiene from shaving as a hobby. Hobbies involve experimentation and experience. Since there are a variety of ways to cut hair, this might lead to acquiring more than someone who just wants to shave. Someone who just wants to shave will probably not find a discussion forum valuable.

I enjoy the few updates on this Chat, the more I think about it @TobyC may have got it right!! My Gillette from set 88, Culmak 84 (sorry best Badger not Boar) and a mug and puck of Old Spice, followed by the O/S splash, I reach out to more than all others in my rotation.
