Bowl Lather Or Face Lather?

I typically face lather but from a bowl. I scoop, paste it in a bowl then go in with a brush that was either a boar soaking and wrung out or just damp, usually a synthetic. I load the brush, paint my face then sue a sprayer to wet the face and swirl then repeat until my face is covered in wet slick lather.

I do this for two passes then spray the bowl and use up whatever soap is left in the cracks and build my 3rd pass and touch up lather. By the 3rd pass my face is usually DFS.

To further elaborate, I like the feel of the brush on my face while face lathering. I use synthetic brushes, an old H.I.S. 1865 (I think that was the model number, it has faded over the past 12 years or so of use), and a Razorock Hive. They’re softer than boar brushes, and I have yet to lose a single bristle.
 
My tap water is hard I do not put it in to my Soap, it cause nasty stuff to grow.

I always Scoop, and use this to make Lather.

You are also not contaminating that rare or expensive soap with a brush or tap water.
Of course the results depend on a few factors like.

Soap quality as you know some soap is crap.

A good bowl many of the good ones have raised ridges in the bottom to help break up the soap.

Right amount of water including whether the water is hard or soft.

And a bit on the brush, stiffer brushes lather easier than softer ones.

With a bit of practice you will have the best lather you have ever had and enjoying your shaves even more.

Hybrid. I face lather from a bowl. I use a brush that's just damp. I paint my face from the bowl then use a sprayer and a synthetic knot 🪢 to splay the soap on my face. I exfoliate this way and save the soap in my puck from being ruined. By the 3rd pass I add water directly into the bowl and whip it up for my final pass and my touch up.
 
I do both. But I prefer to bowl later because I like to have consistent lather for every pass.

I usually bowl lather ,for me adds to the experience. If I'm using a hard soap @ Dr. Selbys' Ill face lather . Distilled water makes for a better lather, depending on your local tap water . I think here in Fl. the quality of water varies considerably . I prefer tallow based croaps so a mister is helpful for face lathering. Either way ,building lather is methodical.
