What DE razor did you shave with today?

Nah, the edge is the same, but the experience is not.
A DE blade in a safety razor is like a professional kitchen knife with a guard.
A half-blade in a shavette is like a bare scalpel.
Technically, it is the exact same steel, but the way it behaves in your hand is completely different. The head and base plate geometry are often totally different.
When you use a half-blade, it is often held by a much smaller head/base plate. Because DE blades are incredibly thin a half-blade has more flex. Flex results in more chatter a lot of times.
Weight and balances, DE razors are generally heavier than SE or AC razors.

Not a shavette, a safety razor that uses Half a DE blade . I have 3, the RazoRock Eco, Leaf twig, and a Yaqi.

Think of half-DE razors as a bit of a hybrid. Even though you’re literally snapping a standard Double Edge blade in half to use them, they’re technically Single Edge (SE) razors.
The logic is pretty simple: since only one side of the blade is doing the work at any given time, they fall into the SE category. It's a different beast from your classic DE razor, where both sharp edges are exposed and ready to go.

I'm going to throw a curve ball your way. How about the vintage Shake Sharp razor? It uses a full DE blade, but only exposes one edge at a time.

Yeah it's a single edge razor with a built-in hone that supposedly sharpens the blade when you shake it. You can also stack an additional de blade in it. It makes the blade thicker but doesn't make much of a difference. By design alone, it's a single edge razor. With functionality, the razor performs as a single edge. Same as with a half de razor, the razor holds a half de blade. By design alone, it's meant to hold half of a DE blade. That design in itself makes it a single edge razor. Functionality, it performs as a single edge razor. I've got a shield titanium safety razor. One side of the base plate holds an artisan blade while the other holds a half de blade.. It has an identity crisis, it looks exactly like a de razor but it isn't.
Do you receive your best shaves from a de razor or an SE razor?

I honestly can get a great shave out of anything, hence my extensive collection. I'm a firm believer is technique trumps tools.

Hahahahaha, I understand. I quit chasing BBS a decade ago. Technique-wise, you can get a great shave with a razor sharp knife. I agree with you as well and that technique will always trump the best tools.
